Seniors Network: A work in progress / For Seniors... By Seniors - Issue #1

In 2007, the Government of Quebec consulted seniors and found that there was a strong need to facilitate access to services for seniors. This need is particularly strong for English-speaking seniors. In 2009, the QCGN received funding from New Horizons for Seniors (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada) and developed the www.quebecseniors.info database which is a first step toward addressing this need.

Over the past few weeks the Seniors Working Group continued to meet. On January 12th, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sheri McLeod, the Executive Director of the NDG Senior Citizens Council (NDGSCC) who spoke to us regarding the rationale in expanding their mandate to include the 50+.

In February, David Cassidy & Ruth Pelletier met with Mr. Danis Prud'homme, the Director General of FADOQ. The work that FADOQ is involved in is very similar dossiers to what our community as identified as their priorities, including issues such as housing, ensuring that all seniors who qualify, are receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), poverty and elder abuse concerns. Another area of great concern is the mature worker who may have lost their job and the difficulties they face being unemployed.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: Greetings Everyone, Your Seniors Action Quebec has been very active since our creation last March. Over the summer we did our bylaws, began the incorporation process and began to write grant requests. In September we launched the SAQ with approval of our bylaws and election of a Board of Directors and the election of an Executive.
